Pelham Police Department Welcomes Captain Rebeca Herrera
Pelham Police Chief Ed Delmore recently introduced the department’s newest captain, Rebeca Herrera, during a Pelham City Council meeting.
“One of the most important things I do as Police Chief is hire, promote, and retain good people,” Delmore said. “I am proud to introduce our newest Police Captain, Rebeca Herrera.”
Although Captain Herrera was officially sworn in on Monday, January 26, a formal swearing-in ceremony was held during the Pelham City Council meeting on February 2, 2026. Her husband, Charles Newfield, a retired law enforcement officer, was in attendance and had the honor of pinning her badge.
Originally from Minnesota, Captain Herrera joins the Pelham Police Department from the Birmingham Police Department, where she served for more than 20 years. Most recently, she held the position of East Precinct Lieutenant. Her extensive career also includes service as Crimes Against Persons Unit Lieutenant, North Precinct Lieutenant, Internal Affairs Division Sergeant, Vice & Narcotics Unit Detective, South Precinct Task Force Officer with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Patrol Officer.
As a lieutenant in the Crimes Against Persons Unit, Captain Herrera commanded the Special Victims Unit, Homicide Unit, Robbery Unit, Sex Offender Unit, and Felony Assault Unit. She was also responsible for maintaining crime data and statistics for presentation to Birmingham Police Department senior command staff and the Mayor’s Office. As a Patrol Sergeant, she revamped protocols for Neighborhood Association meetings and personally attended them to foster positive relationships with community members. Her investigative work included multiple undercover assignments, and during the 2022 World Games, she served as Logistics Section Chief for the Birmingham Police Department.
Captain Herrera holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Special guests in attendance included Representative Allen Treadaway, retired Assistant Chief of the Birmingham Police Department, her husband, Charles Newfield, Captain Julie Quigley-Vining of the Birmingham Police Department, Kimberly Police Chief Ron Sellers, and Valerie Vining.
Captain Herrera brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and dedication to public service, and the City of Pelham is proud to welcome her to the Pelham Police Department. City leaders, department staff, and residents alike look forward to the positive impact she will have as she begins this new chapter of service in our community.
